"Whistleblower" WTC Blueprints Corroborate NIST, Debunk CT Claims

It's been an important week for 9/11 researchers. On March 27, professor Steven Jones, originator and main supporter of the theory of thermite-induced controlled demolition of the Twin Towers, reported via affiliated websites that he had acquired important documents related to the North Tower (WTC1).

These documents were allegedly provided anonymously by an unknown "whistleblower" who was involved in the technical assessments carried out for the lawsuits between Silverstein Properties (owner of WTC 7 and 99-year leaseholder of the Twin Towers) and the insurance companies that objected to Silverstein's request for a double payout for the two attacks of September 11, 2001. The documents include over 200 scans of architectural blueprints of the North Tower in addition to legal and CAD files.

Not the first blueprints; other sets exist

These blueprints, however, are not the first to surface. I had already received copies of the Twin Towers' construction blueprints from a senior Italian architect who had been involved with the WTC project at the time, and research I conducted in 2003 and 2004 pointed out that private rescuers had retained microfilms of the design and construction drawings.

In July 2003 I learned that Louis Briendel, a construction worker who lived two blocks from the WTC on 9/11, had taken part in the rescue operations and in the subsequent cleanup of the buildings that had not been involved directly in the attack but had been affected by the dust and debris of the Towers' collapse.

During this work, Briendel recovered material and debris stored in 40 bags, which were placed at the authorities' disposal in an underground storage facility. As time went by and nobody collected the bags, Briendel repeatedly sent reminders, both personally and through his managers, but the only response he got was that the material was of no interest and that he should get rid of it.

At this point, Briendel inspected the contents of the bags and found that they included a portion of a reel of half-burned but still legible microfilm. One frame was labeled "Tower A - Floors 9 - 33". In other words, he had found a microfilm of the blueprints of the North Tower. The reel included documents related to several projects, such as Bank of America, Chang HWA Bank and, more importantly, drawings labeled B-Level Parking Area with the Fuel and Generator Rooms.

Research allowed Briendel to attribute the microfilm to the New York and New Jersey Photographic Offices, which used to be on the 74th floor of the North Tower. Through Bank of America, he determined that the blueprints referred to work that had been carried out in 1993, but BoA had no microfilm record of projects submitted to the owners. Nobody expressed any interest in these documents: neither the Port Authority of New York of New Jersey (PANYNJ), which had built and owned the Twin Towers, nor the architects who had signed the blueprints that had survived the collapse. So the microfilm was put into cold storage and that is presumably where it still is.

Another important reference to blueprints is the book American Ground, by William Langenwiesche. On page 47 of the Italian edition, Langenwiesche discusses LERA (an engineering firm run by Leslie E. Robertson, the designer of the World Trade Center) and states that LERA used its own copy of the original drawings (the only surviving copy, since the remainder of the documents were stored by PANYNJ in its offices in the North Tower and was thus lost in the collapse) with great care and sparingly, carefully controlling dissemination in order to ensure that LERA would be involved in the clearing and rebuilding process and to protect itself in view of the impending victim compensation lawsuits.

These documents are therefore important, although the releases are only a very small part of the full set of drawings. Their significance is discussed below.

Why now?

There is also the question of timing: why are these documents being provided or disclosed now? After a period in which alternative theories flourished, it seems that many skeptics are having second thoughts, even in the US. These skeptics include people who are becoming uneasy with the increasingly imaginative theories which involve not only thermite and explosives, but nuclear weapons or cosmic rays used to cause the collapse of the Twin Towers.

An example of these second thoughts is the self-imposed blackout of the PentagonResearch website. Russell Pickering, the site's webmaster, is rather critical of the official reports and has chosen to take a six-month break in order to gain a better understanding and at the same time avoid publishing incorrect information, especially in view of new witness reports which have emerged more than five years after the events and describe the path of the aircraft that hit the Pentagon.

In any case, it is rather strange to see the various alternative theories increasingly contradicting each other while they are being also contradicted by technical and scientific findings. At this point in time, the release of the blueprints might have two possible explanations: from a conspiracy theorist's standpoint, it could be meant to breathe new life into criticism of the analyses provided by NIST. From a non-CT standpoint, it might be the opportunity to deal a final blow to the arguments that pervade the Internet and prove beyond doubt the technical inconsistency of such criticism.

Reactions

Whatever the reason, the importance of these documents has undoubtedly been underestimated broadly or perhaps has not been understood fully, since the reactions so far have only been attacks against NIST. Here in Italy, there has been only silence from those who claim to be seeking the truth about 9/11 but are actually busy talking about other things.

I believe these documents should be analyzed to determine, once and for all, whether NIST was indeed misleading about the structural details and massaged them to match the official version, as the conspiracy theorists claim.

But before delving into this issue, the reaction of some US conspiracy theory gurus deserve mention. Leaving aside professor Steven Jones, who is the direct recipient of the documents, the Loose Change website includes this post, which quotes from the letter that was attached to the documents, giving clues to the alleged source of these files:

Excerpts from the letter sent to Dr. Jones: "I was not sure if this information was available and I wanted to make sure that it first went to people who are well versed on the existing material. I have enclosed ... the architectural plans of the WTC Complex in .TIFF format. I have also included the WTC Tower collapse ... data that [we] compiled. My hope is that this can be posted on the appropriate websites and more people can make use of it. I would like to contribute my efforts where I can as I was on the ... team working for Silverstein Group ... in 2002". I'm glad this vital evidence can finally be put into the public domain where it belongs. Many thanks to this individual, and to Dr. Jones for passing this information onto me.

Poison pill?

To be honest, this statement is quite perplexing, most of all because the provided TIFF drawings are architectural blueprints, not the construction blueprints. If the goal was to revive weary CT sites which were running out of new stories, it seems to have been achieved.

On Alex Jones' Infowars.net site, Steve Watson cautiously uses the stratagem of taking a rather critical quote from another site:

The detailed architectural drawings make clear what official reports have apparently attempted to hide: that the Twin Towers had massive core columns, and those columns ran most of the height of each Tower before transitioning to columns with smaller cross-sections.
Both of the government-sponsored engineering studies of the Twin Towers' "collapses" -- FEMA's and NIST's -- are highly misleading about the core structures. Neither Report discloses dimensions for core columns -- dimensions that are clearly evident in the architectural drawings. Both Reports use a variety of techniques seemingly designed to minimize the strength of the cores or to conceal their structural role entirely.

Claims like these raise the question of whether these blueprints were actually a poison pill. Whoever sent them probably knew that he or she could rely on superficial reactions, to which we are by now accustomed due to a certain way of interpreting the search for truth, rather than on eliciting serious analysis from experts in the field.

Column cross-sections

Steve Watson's claim is at best incorrect, although not entirely false, and could be checked easily if only one bothered to read NIST's final report, dated September 2005. NCSTAR 1-3, “Mechanical and metallurgical analysis of structural steel”, Chapter 2, page 10, section 2.3.2, includes this diagram:

The diagram clearly provides the designations of the core columns and the floor at which their cross-section changed from box-like to H-shaped (or "wide flange", WF). It also indicates the cross-section of the core columns at the 84th floor.

I checked this illustration against the corresponding blueprint, which is identified as A-A-143 and shows the core structure for floors 84 to 86. The match is perfect. I also checked many of the indications of the floors at which the column cross-section changed, and again the match is perfect.

Accordingly, it is false to claim that NIST provided misleading information regarding the cross-section of the columns. Anyone claiming this is in bad faith or has an inadequate grasp of the official reports. That's a polite way of saying that the people who make such claims haven't even bothered to read the reports they're trying to criticize.

Column dimensions

Having established that NIST did not misrepresent core column cross-sections, we can now focus on column size. The same NIST report shows this illustration on page 11:

The diagram clearly provides the dimensions of the cross-sections of the core columns between the 83rd and 86th floors and also provides the codes of the H-shaped beams.

Conspiracy theory flawed at the core

How on earth can the whistleblower's blueprints be used to claim that these figures are incorrect? They're architectural drawings, not construction drawings (which are also available for the WTC). This means that the various architectural elements are shown schematically, not with the scale and detail required for construction. Accordingly, it is a colossal mistake to use these blueprints as sources for scale details of structural components (and that is why they may be poison pills).

This can be demonstrated by considering the drawing shown below, which is not taken from the blueprints released by Steven Jones. It is one of the WTC construction drawings of which I have copies:

This is drawing A-AB-266, Main Lobby Core Wall Plan Details. It clearly shows that the bottom left corner column, numbered 1001 in the previous illustration, has a closed rectangular cross-section which contains an additional reinforcement member. This matches the information provided for the core columns at the foot of the building, as shown by the following photographs:

These photographs show the base of a column and (most importantly) an actual column, preserved as part of the WTC evidence.

Let's see how the architectural blueprints show this very column by looking at drawing A-A-20, First Floor Core Plan, from the whistleblower's release:

We can now compare the detail of the cross-section of this same column 1001, as shown in the architectural blueprint ( the whistleblower's release):

and as shown in the construction blueprint which I possess:

It is therefore absolutely evident that any use of these architectural drawings to investigate not only the dimensions of the columns but even merely their cross-sectional shape is a harebrained approach, worthy of those who posit the involvement of nukes or space rays in the collapse of the WTC.

Core details provided by NIST

Let's see how NIST explicitly describes the core columns of the Twin Towers.

The photograph below shows clearly the exact point of transition from box column to H-shaped column:

The core columns of course were not mutually independent: they were linked by horizontal members known as core channels, shown below in some examples of their failure modes:

Let us also check how the much-maligned final report from NIST describes the various types of core column, so we can see whether the conspiracy theorists' allegation of a NIST attempt to minimize the structural strength of the cores holds water. These are the two paragraphs which give the specifications of the two types of column used in the WTC core:

There is no sign of any attempt to minimize the structural role of the core colums. Indeed, NIST provides the names of the suppliers, the specifications of the materials used, their yield strengths, and their plate thickness.

The following chapter of the same NIST report further describes the structural role of the core's box columns and their quality control characteristics. These were the most important columns in terms of bearing the static loads of the central core of the building.

Despite these high quality levels, the events that occurred in the Twin Towers led to an overload of the structure, which literally shattered due to the dynamic loads induced by the failure of the floors struck by the aircraft impact and then weakened by fire.

Giant puzzle

As an additional detail, it is worth nothing that every structural component of the Twin Towers was stamped or marked with unique identification codes, as shown below:

Accordingly, we know the location and main mechanical production and installation characteristics for every single component in the design, in addition to the name of its supplier and its shipping batch code. Essentially, the Twin Towers were a huge puzzle in which the builders had to ensure on-time delivery of the unique parts intended for the assembly process.

In view of these findings, I believe there is no way one can claim that NIST attempted to provide misleading information. Those who make such allegations are probably poorly informed or lack the technical skills needed to comprehend the wording of specialist reports.

One can gain some insight into the stresses to which the core colums were subjected from these photographs of some of the columns recovered and retained for technical inspections:

Conclusion

In summary: the release of the architectural blueprints is certainly important, because it allows us to increase our knowledge of the buildings (for example the layout of the elevators). But it would be absolutely wrong, and ethically unacceptable, to use these documents to mount a campaign against NIST's technical reports. I believe that these findings also clearly show how gratuitous and groundless the CT's allegations of manipulation are.

Per chi si occupa di ricerca sull’11 settembre, quella appena conclusa è stata una settimana importante. Il 27 marzo il professor Steven Jones, ideatore e principale sostenitore della teoria della demolizione controllata delle torri del World Trade Center con l’uso della thermite, ha comunicato, per il tramite di alcuni siti amici, di essere entrato in possesso di documentazione importante relativa alla Torre Nord, il WTC1.

Questa documentazione sarebbe stata ricevuta in forma anonima da una sconosciuta “gola profonda”, che avrebbe avuto una partecipazione negli accertamenti tecnici svolti nel corso delle cause legali fra la Silverstein Properties, società proprietaria dell’edificio WTC 7 e affittuaria per 99 anni delle Torri Gemelle, e il pool di società assicurative oppostesi alla richiesta di doppio risarcimento per il duplice attentato dell’11 settembre 2001.

Sappiamo che questa controversia legale si è conclusa dopo numerose sessioni con la sconfitta di Silverstein, dato che la corte di giustizia ha affermato che entrambi gli attacchi facevano parte di un unico evento terroristico coordinato, da risarcire in blocco e senza far valere la copertura assicurativa per ogni singolo evento.

La documentazione pervenuta è un fascicolo completo, contenente scansioni di oltre 200 tavole architetturali cianografiche della Torre Nord (le cosiddette “blueprint”), più altri documenti di ispirazione legale e file di programmi di calcolo/CAD.

Sono certamente di notevole interesse le blueprint, anche se non sono le prime che si vedono, sia su Internet che privatamente. Personalmente avevo già ricevuto copie di disegni costruttivi delle Torri Gemelle da un architetto italiano che in gioventù aveva partecipato ai lavori, mentre da ricerche da me svolte fra il 2003 ed il 2004 avevo appreso la notizia dell’esistenza di documentazione microfilmata, conservata da privati soccorritori, delle tavole di progetto e dei lavori successivamente eseguiti.

E’ interessante, a tal fine, segnalare che ricevetti la prima notizia dell’esistenza di questa documentazione nel luglio del 2003, quando appresi che Louis Briendel, un muratore che lavorava a due isolati di distanza dal WTC nel giorno dell’attentato, aveva partecipato ai lavori di soccorso e successiva ripulitura degli edifici non direttamente coinvolti nell’attacco ma comunque colpiti dalla coltre di polvere e detriti generata dal crollo delle Torri.

Nel corso di questi lavori, Briendel aveva recuperato materiale e detriti racchiusi in 40 borse, che erano state poste a disposizione delle autorità e collocate in un magazzino sotterraneo. Passando il tempo e non venendo ritirate queste borse, Briendel ne sollecitò il ritiro, sia personalmente che tramite i suoi responsabili, ricevendo come unica risposta che in realtà quel materiale non interessava e avrebbe dovuto disfarsene.

Fu a quel punto che Louis guardò cosa era stato recuperato e rivenne, fra le molte carte e detriti, una porzione di bobina di microfilm che era mezzo bruciacchiata na ancora in parte leggibile. In un frame aveva la scritta "Tower A - Floors 9 - 33": vale a dire, aveva trovato un microfilm delle blueprint della Torre Nord.

Sullo spezzone di microfilm c’era documentazione riguardante diversi progetti, in particolare “Bank of America”, “Chang HWA Bank” e soprattutto tavole del progetto “B-Level Parking Area with the Fuel and Generator Rooms”.

Dopo alcune ricerche, Briendel attribuì il microfilm al “New York and New Jersey Photographic Offices”, posto al 74° piano della Torre Nord. Tramite la Bank of America, appurò che i progetti erano relativi a lavori effettivamente svolti nel 1993, ma che loro, in quanto committenti, non avevano mai fatto alcuna copia in microfilm dei progetti sottoposti alla proprietà. Nessuno manifestò interesse per questi documenti, né la Port Authority di New York e New Jersey (PANYNJ, che aveva costruito le Torri Gemelle e che ne era a tutti gli effetti la proprietaria), né gli stessi architetti che avevano firmato i progetti salvatisi dal crollo. Il microfilm venne allora messo… in un congelatore e là ancora dovrebbe trovarsi.

Un secondo importante riferimento alle blueprint è invece nel libro “American Ground”, di William Langenwiesche, a pagina 47 dell’edizione italiana, quando, parlando del LERA (uno studio di ingegneria condotto da Leslie E. Robertson, progettista del World Trade Center), sostiene che il LERA utilizzò la propria copia dei disegni originari (l’unica sopravvissuta, perché il resto della documentazione era conservato dalla PANYNJ nei propri uffici all’interno della Torre Nord e quindi era andata persa nel crollo) con grande attenzione e parsimonia, centellinandone la diffusione per garantirsi sia una partecipazione nei lavori di sgombero e ricostruzione, sia una tutela in vista delle cause legali che andavano profilandosi per i risarcimenti alle vittime.

Quindi questi documenti sono importanti, anche se quanto rilasciato è solamente una piccolissima parte (e vedremo quanto significativa) dei disegni di progetto.

Un’altra questione da porsi è perché questi documenti siano stati consegnati o resi pubblici solo ora. Dopo un periodo in cui le teorie alternative avevano avuto ampia ed incontrollata diffusione, sembra che recentemente si assista anche negli USA ad un ripensamento, che ha innescato una profonda riflessione anche in chi non ritiene di riconoscersi nelle teorie alternative sempre più fantasiose che, oltre alla thermite e agli esplosivi, parlano di armi nucleari o a raggi cosmici che avrebbero provocato il collasso delle Twin Towers.

Un esempio di questo momento particolare di riflessione è il volontario auto-oscuramento del sito Pentagonresearch, il cui webmaster Russell Pickering, piuttosto critico nei confronti dei resoconti ufficiali, ha deciso di prendersi una pausa di sei mesi per cercare di capire e evitare nel frattempo di pubblicare dati errati, soprattutto alla luce delle nuove testimonianze, emerse dopo più di cinque anni dai fatti, sulla traiettoria dell’aereo che colpì il Pentagono.

E’ piuttosto strano, comunque, vedere come le diverse teorie alternative siano sempre più spesso fra loro in contrasto e tutte contraddette dalle evidenze tecnico-scientifiche. In questo momento la pubblicazione delle blueprint potrebbe avere due possibili spiegazioni: in chiave complottista, si potrebbe avere un rigurgito di vis polemica contro le analisi del NIST, ma in chiave “ufficialista” potrebbe essere l’occasione per stroncare completamente le polemiche che imperversano sul Web, dimostrando chiaramente l’inconsistenza tecnica delle critiche portate all’operato dello stesso NIST.

Quello che è certo, comunque, è che l’importanza di questi documenti è stata ampiamente sottovalutata o meglio, forse non compresa integralmente, visto che le reazioni finora sono state solamente in chiave di rivalsa rispetto al NIST, mentre in Italia si assiste alla solita scena muta di chi dice di ricercare la verità ma che poi, nei fatti, parla d’altro.

Personalmente ritengo che sia il caso di analizzare questa documentazione e dire, finalmente se il NIST abbia o no manipolato i dati della struttura, per piegarli, secondo i complottisti, alla versione ufficiale dei fatti.

Prima di vedere nel dettaglio quest'argomento, anche le reazioni di alcuni guru americani delle teorie alternative meritano un accenno. A parte il professor Steven Jones, destinatario primo dell’invio di cui abbiamo detto, il sito di Loose Change riporta questo intervento, tratto dalla lettera che accompagnava il materiale:

Da queste parole si apprende che, effettivamente, il materiale è stato inviato da una persona appartenente ai gruppi di lavoro della Silverstein Properties perché potesse essere pubblicato da siti che lo mettessero a disposizione di tutti coloro che lo volessero utilizzare.

Questa formula, francamente, mi lascia molto perplesso, soprattutto perché le tavole fornite, in formato TIFF, sono quelle architettoniche, non quelle costruttive. Naturalmente, se l’intento era quello di ridare vigore ai siti complottisti un po’ appannati e a corto d’argomenti, il risultato sembrerebbe essere stato raggiunto.

Sul sito Infowars.net di Alex Jones, Steve Watson scrive un articolo ma, per prudenza, utilizza l’espediente di riportare una citazione piuttosto critica da un altro sito:

Traducendo liberamente, questi documenti chiarirebbero (il condizionale è mio) ciò che i report ufficiali avrebbero cercato di nascondere, e cioè che le Torri Gemelle avevano robuste colonne nel nucleo centrale e che queste colonne erano tali per molta parte dell’altezza degli edifici, prima di passare a colonne di sezione minore.

Sempre secondo la citazione, sia la FEMA che il NIST, finanziati da fondi pubblici, avrebbero fornito dati ingannevoli e fuorvianti in merito alla struttura del core. Nessun report rivelerebbe le vere dimensioni delle colonne del core, dimensioni che sarebbero (il condizionale è sempre mio, mentre l’autore fa una affermazione certa) chiaramente evidenti dai disegni architetturali. Sempre secondo l’autore, entrambi i report ufficiali userebbero una serie di tecniche per minimizzare la resistenza del core o per dissimulare del tutto il suo ruolo strutturale.

Leggendo queste affermazioni, il dubbio che si possa trattare in realtà di un regalo avvelenato è più che lecito. Chi ha inviato queste tavole probabilmente sapeva di poter contare su reazioni epidermiche e superficiali, alle quali ormai siamo abituati da un certo modo di interpretare la ricerca della verità, non su analisi serie di esperti del settore.

L’affermazione riportata da Steve Watson è quanto meno errata, se non del tutto falsa, e sarebbe facilmente verificabile da tutti se solamente si analizzasse quanto scritto nella reportistica definitiva del NIST del settembre 2005. Nel proprio report NCSTAR 1-3, “Mechanical and metallurgical analysis of structural steel”, il NIST riporta a pagina 10, nel capitolo 2, paragrafo 2.3.2, la seguente illustrazione:

In questa figura, oltre alla nomenclatura ufficiale da progetto, risulta chiaramente indicato il piano in cui la sezione delle colonne del core passa da rettangolare chiusa a doppia T aperta ed è indicata la forma della sezione all’84° piano, che è oggetto della rappresentazione.

Ho verificato quest'immagine con la corrispondente blueprint, individuata dal codice A-A-143, raffigurante la struttura del core per i piani dall’84° all’86°, e coincide perfettamente. Ho verificato a campione la corrispondenza del piano di cambiamento della sezione delle colonne e ho ancora trovato corrispondenza.

Quindi è falso dire che il Nist abbia fornito dati fuorvianti sulla sezione delle colonne e affermarlo può significare solamente cattiva fede o scarsa padronanza della reportistica ufficiale (un eufemismo per dire di non aver nemmeno letto ciò che si vorrebbe criticare).

Chiarito che la forma della sezione delle colonne del core non è stata oggetto di manipolazione da parte del NIST, veniamo ora a parlare delle dimensioni. Sempre nello stesso report, il NIST pubblica a pagina 11 la seguente immagine:

Vengono chiaramente fornite le dimensioni delle sezioni delle colonne del core fra i piani 83 e 86, con l’indicazione aggiuntiva della codifica delle travi a doppia T utilizzate.

Mi piacerebbe sapere in base a quale lettura delle blueprint si possa dire che queste indicazioni non siano corrette, visto che le blueprint non sono disegni costruttivi, che pure esistono per il WTC, ma sono solamente tavole architetturali. Ciò significa che i vari elementi architettonici sono raffigurati convenzionalmente e non in scala costruttiva, per cui è un errore colossale pensare di ricavare da tali tavole indicazioni in scala di componenti strutturali (in questo, forse, sta il regalo avvelenato).

Per dimostrare quanto affermo, consideriamo la seguente immagine, che non fa parte delle blueprint rilasciate da Jones, ma dei disegni costruttivi del WTC in mio possesso:

Si tratta del particolare della sezione delle colonne del core dell’atrio principale (Main Lobby Core Wall Plan Details, tavola A-AB-266), in cui si vede chiaramente che la colonna dell’angolo inferiore sinistro, corrispondente alla 1001 della figura predente, ha sezione rettangolare chiusa, contenente un ulteriore irrobustimento. Questo coincide con quanto segnalato per le colonne del core poste alla base dell’edificio, come visibile da queste immagini:

Queste immagini mostrano la base di una colonna e soprattutto una colonna reale, conservata fra i reperti del WTC.

Vediamo ora come le tavole architettoniche rilasciate rappresentano questa stessa colonna, facendo riferimento alla tavola A-A-20, First Floor Core Plan. La tavola rilasciata è questa:

E’ quindi assolutamente chiaro a tutti che utilizzare queste tavole architettoniche per fare indagini non solo sulle dimensioni, ma anche sulla semplice forma della sezione, è demenziale e degno di chi ipotizza atomiche o raggi cosmici nel collasso del WTC.

Vediamo ora come il NIST descrive esplicitamente le colonne del core delle Torri Gemelle.

Qui sotto possiamo vedere esattamente dove una colonna passava da sezione rettangolare chiusa a doppia T aperta:

Naturalmente le colonne non erano fra loro indipendenti, ma collegate da travature orizzontali (note anche come Core Channel), di cui possiamo vedere alcuni esempi di cedimento in questa immagine:

Vediamo ora come il tanto vituperato report definitivo NIST descrive le diverse tipologie di colonne del core, per verificare se l’accusa lanciata dai complottisti di aver voluto minimizzare le caratteristiche di resistenza strutturale è fondata o meno.

Questi sono i due paragrafi in cui vengono specificate le caratteristiche delle due tipologie di colonne presenti nel core delle Torri Gemelle:

Francamente, non sembra proprio che si voglia minimizzare il loro ruolo portante, ma anzi si indicano i nomi dei fornitori e il titolo dei materiali utilizzati, oltre alle caratteristiche di carico di snervamento e spessore delle lastre piane.

Nel capitolo successivo dello stesso report NIST vengono ulteriormente definiti sia il ruolo portante sia le caratteristiche di controllo di qualità con le quali vennero realizzate le colonne del core a sezione rettangolare chiusa, le più importanti per la resistenza ai carichi statici del nucleo centrale dell’edificio.

Nonostante questi elevati livelli qualitativi, la situazione verificatasi nelle Twin Towers portò ad un sovraccarico della struttura, che si sfasciò letteralmente sotto l’effetto dei carichi dinamici indotti dal cedimento dei piani colpiti prima dall’impatto dell’aeroplano e poi indeboliti dall’incendio.

Per maggiore informazione, ricordiamo che ogni componente strutturale delle Torri era punzonato o pitturato con codici identificativi univoci, come nell’esempio qui sotto:

Di ogni pezzo è quindi possibile conoscere la posizione all’interno del progetto e le principali caratteristiche meccaniche di realizzazione ed installazione, oltre al nome del fornitore e al numero di codice del lotto di spedizione. In pratica le Torri Gemelle erano un enorme puzzle, in cui la macchina organizzativa doveva assicurare la consegna al momento giusto dei pezzi univoci destinati alla posa in opera.

Alla luce di quanto dimostrato, credo si possa dire che in nessuna maniera il NIST abbia voluto fornire informazioni fuorvianti, ma probabilmente chi lancia queste accuse non è abbastanza informato o non ha le basi tecniche adeguate per apprezzare quanto scritto nei report specialistici.

Per avere un’idea degli sforzi cui sono state sottoposte le colonne del core, possiamo osservare le immagini di alcune di esse, recuperate e tenute a disposizione per le verifiche tecniche:

Riassumendo, il rilascio delle blueprint architetturali è certamente importante, perché consente di aumentare la nostra conoscenza degli edifici (per esempio, la struttura degli ascensori), ma sarebbe assolutamente sbagliato, oltre che eticamente scorretto, utilizzare questi documenti per montare una campagna di denigrazione della reportistica tecnica elaborata dal NIST. Credo che anche da queste considerazioni sia chiaro quanto siano gratuite e prive di fondamento le accuse di manipolazione lanciate dai complottisti.

WTC7: il NIST conferma la demolizione

Giunge un momento nel quale l'evidenza dei fatti supera ogni resistenza e riluttanza. E in quel momento si decide se finire dalla parte dei cocciuti rabbiosi o da quella dei pentiti ravveduti. E' una decisione che può costare molto, in termini di dignità e di reputazione: ma il costo sarebbe anche maggiore se si scegliesse di restare ostinatamente, caparbiamente abbarbicati a una versione degli eventi che ormai non è più sostenibile.

In questi mesi, il gruppo Undicisettembre ha lavorato all'analisi di oltre novanta ipotesi di complotto, dimostrandone e documentandone l'infondatezza oltre ogni ragionevole dubbio. Ma come ogni ricercatore obiettivo sa bene, esiste sempre la possibilità che qualche altra ipotesi, prima o poi, si riveli esatta.

Quel momento è arrivato, ed è con umiltà e risolutezza che Undicisettembre accetta la sconfitta. Abbiamo sempre detto che di fronte a dati inoppugnabili avremmo accettato anche l'ipotesi di cospirazione più straordinaria e apparentemente incredibile. Ci sembra quindi necessario e imprescibile uno sforzo di dignitosa coerenza. Quello che non ci aspettavamo era che dati di questo genere arrivassero proprio dalla cosiddetta "versione ufficiale". E confesso che in questo momento proviamo un amaro sapore di tradimento e delusione.

L'atteso rapporto definitivo del NIST sul crollo del WTC7, inizialmente annunciato per dicembre 2006 e poi rinviato ai primi mesi del 2007, è stato finalmente pubblicato, e non lascia spazio a dubbi. Il WTC7, la "terza torre", è stato effettivamente demolito, ma non con la termite come ipotizza Steven Jones. E questo implica conseguenze tanto ovvie quanto sconvolgenti.

Ci è di lieve consolazione il fatto che la realtà, per quanto terribile, ha superato la fantasia dei complottisti, e che siamo nel torto in compagnia dei vari Mazzucco, Chiesa, Icke, Alex Jones, Dave Vonkleist: avevano sì intuito che il WTC7 era la "smoking gun", ma avevano sbagliato le modalità.

Il rapporto del NIST è disponibile qui, ma il grafico qui accanto è più eloquente di mille parole. Il WTC7 è stato colpito da un aereo. Lo stesso, singolo aereo che ha abbattuto le Torri Gemelle per poi simulare l'impatto a Shanksville.

Non desideriamo mancare di rispetto alle vittime di questa tragedia, ma ci sono giorni come questo nei quali s'impone una riflessione sull'insensatezza ormai manifesta del complottismo.
