Saleh al-Hussayen: the saudi official who stayed at the same hotel as three hijackers

On the night between 10 and 11 September 2001, three of the hijackers of American Airlines Flight 77 that would crash into the Pentagon (pilot Hani Hanjour and muscle hijackers Khalid Almihdhar and Nawaf Alhazmi) spent the last night of their lives at the Marriott Residence Inn in Herndon, Virginia. That night, Saleh Ibn Abdul Rahman Hussayen, an official of the Interior Ministry of Saudi Arabia who had been in the United States since August 20, was also staying in the same hotel.
The man was in Washington DC for various meetings with different leaders of Islamic groups, such as alleged Saudi charities that had links to terrorist organizations and hosts of websites that spread ideas of Saudi religious leaders close to Osama bin Laden. Among the imams that Hussayen met were some exponents of Wahhabism (an extremist and literalist current of Sunni Islam) who investigators believe exhorted followers to violence against members of other religions or other Islamic currents.
Videos from the Marriott Residence Inn's security cameras and FBI interviews with hotel staff have revealed no evidence that Hussayen met with the terrorists, but his past is not entirely unrelated to terrorism. In the 90s, in fact, he was director of the SAAR Foundation, a Saudi holding company based in Virginia which, according to a joint investigation by various federal agencies known as Operation Green Quest, financed terrorist organizations by laundering money.
Saleh al-Hussayen was interrogated by the FBI but investigators believe he was lying to them. To avoid having to answer questions, he then faked a seizure for which he was taken to the hospital, where the doctors on shift found no health problems. The FBI recommended that he not be allowed to leave the country once he was released from the hospital, but despite their recommendations, Saleh al-Hussayen was able to leave for Saudi Arabia with his wife on September 19, 2001.
Unfortunately, Saleh al-Hussayen will never be able to explain why the three hijackers stayed in the same hotel where he also was staying while in the USA, because he died in 2013 of natural causes and is buried in Riyadh. It therefore remains only for investigators to shed light on yet another mystery regarding the links between the 9/11 hijackers and the Saudi regime.

La notte tra il 10 e l'11 settembre del 2001 tre dei dirottatori del volo American Airlines 77 che si sarebbe schiantato contro il Pentagono (il pilota Hani Hanjour e i muscle hijackers Khalid Almihdhar e e Nawaf Alhazmi), passarono l'ultima notte della loro vita al Marriott Residence Inn di Herndon, in Virginia. Nello stesso albergo quella notte alloggiava anche Saleh Ibn Abdul Rahman Hussayen, ufficiale del ministero degli interni di Riyadh, che si trovava negli Stati Uniti dal 20 agosto.
L'uomo si trovava nella capitale americana per vari incontri con altrettanti capi di gruppi islamici, quali presunti enti di beneficienza sauditi che avevano legami con organizzazioni terroristiche e gestori di siti web che diffondevano idee di leader religiosi sauditi vicini a Osama bin Laden. Tra gli imam che Hussayen incontrò vi erano alcuni esponenti dello Wahhabismo (corrente estremista e letteralista dell'Islam Sunnita) che gli investigatori ritengono inneggiassero alla violenza nei confronti di appartenenti ad altre religioni o altre correnti islamiche.
Dai video delle telecamere di sicurezza del Marriott Residence Inn e dalle interviste dell'FBI con il personale dell'albergo non sono emerse prove che Hussayen abbia incontrato i terroristi, tuttavia il suo passato non è del tutto estraneo a legami con il terrorismo. Negli anni 90, infatti, era stato direttore della SAAR Foundation, holding saudita con sede in Virginia che secondo un'indagine congiunta di varie agenzie federali nota come Operation Green Quest finanziava varie organizzazioni terroristiche riciclando denaro.
Saleh al-Hussayen fu interrogato dall'FBI ma gli investigatori ritengono che stesse loro mentendo. Per non dover rispondere alle domande, l'uomo finse quindi un attacco epilettico per quale fu portato all'ospedale dove i medici in turno non gli trovarono nessun problema di salute. L'FBI raccomandò che non gli fosse concesso di lasciare il paese una volta dimesso dall'ospedale, ma nonostante le raccomandazioni il 19 settembre 2001 Saleh al-Hussayen poté partire per l'Arabia Saudita con la moglie.
Purtroppo Saleh al-Hussayen non potrà mai più rispondere del motivo per cui i tre dirottatori stettero nello stesso albergo in cui rimase anche lui durante la sua permanenza negli USA, perché è morto nel 2013 di cause naturali ed è sepolto a Riyadh. Rimane quindi solo agli investigatori il compito di far luce su questo ennesimo mistero sui legami tra i dirottatori dell'11/9 e il regime saudita.
